Background of the study
Religious language holds immense power in fostering social cohesion by conveying shared values, beliefs, and traditions. In Igbo communities, religious narratives, sermons, and prayers—rich in symbolic language and cultural references—serve as a unifying force that reinforces communal bonds (Eze, 2023). These expressions are instrumental in promoting collective identity and moral frameworks, which are vital for social stability. However, modernization and the influence of global languages are altering these traditional forms, potentially undermining their unifying capacity. This study investigates the role of religious language in promoting social cohesion within Igbo communities by analyzing sermons, religious texts, and community interactions. The research explores how the fidelity of religious discourse contributes to community solidarity and what factors may disrupt its integrative function (Okafor, 2024). The findings aim to offer recommendations for strengthening religious language practices to ensure they continue to serve as a cornerstone for social unity.

Statement of the problem
Despite its unifying potential, the erosion of traditional religious language in Igbo communities due to modern influences threatens social cohesion. Inadequate adaptation of religious discourse to contemporary contexts has led to misinterpretations that weaken community bonds (Eze, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of religious language in fostering social cohesion.
  2. To identify factors contributing to the erosion of traditional discourse.
  3. To propose strategies for reinforcing religious language.

Research questions:

  1. How does religious language promote social cohesion?
  2. What modern influences are eroding traditional practices?
  3. How can religious discourse be strengthened?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it clarifies the link between religious language and social unity, providing insights for religious leaders and community organizers to preserve traditional discourse and promote cohesion (Eze, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to religious language in Igbo communities; excludes secular language influences.

Definitions of terms:

  • Religious language: Language used in spiritual and religious contexts.
  • Social cohesion: The strength of relationships and solidarity among community members.
  • Igbo communities: Groups of people who speak the Igbo language.
